The Bluetooth Bar Game

I go out to bars maybe once a week, sometimes twice in the Summer, but only because the roof deck at the Eagle is irresistible. Typically I'll go out on a school night with a friend, to catch up or I'll go out and wreak havoc with my sister, Alan.

When I go to a bar I like to play what I call "the Bluetooth game". It's not so much a game as it is a source of geeky amusement for myself. After all most bars are really boring and lacking in suitable eye candy.
What the BT Bar game entails is activating the Bluetooth transceiver on my cell phone. Some modern cell phones have this, but if your's doesn't, then your plum outta luck, no BT Bar game for you. You can always look for the Bluetooth symbol (blue oval icon with white triangles shown above) to see if your phone has it. Or just poke around your phone's settings and see if there is a Bluetooth feature.
Btw, for those that don't know what Bluetooth is, it's a short-range wireless protocol used mainly in cell phones for transferring data wirelessly and also for devices like wireless mouse & keyboards for computers.
...So I turn my BT on and then scan the area for other Bluetooth devices. Depending on where I am I may get a pretty lengthy list of other active BT devices. I've noticed at G bar I get the most. Must be all those not-so tech savvy fashionistas. Once I've gotten a list of active BT devices nearby, I then select a rather unmentionable picture stored on my phone and I then attempt to send that picture via Bluetooth to a selected device. So far I've never actually had a situation where somebody accepted the transmission. Most of the time, the transfer fails, either because the recipient refused the connection, or it just times out because they didn't even notice it. One day I'm sure someone will let their curiosity get the better of them and accept the incoming file transfer, and then I'll delight at hearing a scream heard across the bar when they receive the picture. I'm cracking up already just thinking about it.

So next time you're sititng in a bar with your cell phone and you get an anonymous Bluetooth request, it might be me.

The Golden Age of Chix in SciFi

Due to the annoying nature of the video I embedded, I decided to remove it. If you want to see it, go here to watch it.

Wanna Be On Top?

I just love America's Next Top Model. Especially the cheezy theme song...which cracks me up because I sing it to my "stricktly-a-bottom" best friend just to tease him. Wanna be on top? Wanna be on top? Na na nana na.

Kaaaaaaaay-9!!!!

On our way to the Phoenix bar last night for a friend's birthday, we passed by Forbidden Planet, that old sci-fi book shop. In the window I happened to spot a new toy, a remote control K-9! I must have.

K-9 was one of The Doctor's companions, in the original Doctor Who series (1963-1996). It was Tom Baker, the 4th Doctor, sometime around 1978 who had K-9 as his dog and a companion. Only a few episodes later K-9 (mark I) left, staying behind on Gallifrey with Leela, another companion of the Doctor's. It was quite sad actually. I think I cried (hey I was 10). But much to everyone's surprise, at the end of that episode in the TARDIS control room, the Doctor pushes in a big box. Stenciled on the side,K-9 mark II. Yeah, K-9 continues the adventures.

So now I just placed my order for my very own remote control K-9. My very own! I love K-9. I can't wait to make him whiz around the apartment and chase our dog-like cat, Gator (evil laughter).

28 Days (Now or) Later

I found one of the more interesting Google Maps Mash-ups today. If you don't know what a Mash-up is, it's the combining of Google Maps database with some other database and viola, you've got yourself something new, mash-ed up!

This one is called Who Is Sick?

There's no need to register or anything like that. All you do is enter any one or all of 6 symptoms, your ZIP code, and how long ago your illness started. The web app will do the rest. It records your location and how sick you are/were. Now you can view the map and see if your similar symptoms are prevalent in your area.
I did so just this morning, since I was sick at home yesterday with an apparent food poisoning; body aches, head ache, chills, vomiting, but no fever.

Granted the symptoms are all very basic, from gastrointestinal to respiratory ailments. But still, if you have the Flu, you can vaguely chart it and see if you have an outbreak in your area.

It would be interesting to monitor all the time and watch for severe outbreaks, kind of like 28 Days Later.
